Child and Family Services Improvement and Innovation Act

Pass the Child and Family Services Improvement and Innovation Act (S 1542/HR 2883)

With time running short before the end of the fiscal year, Congress needs to pass this bill to reauthorize the Promoting Safe and Stable Families and the Child Welfare Services programs. The new fiscal year starts Oct. 1, and we do not want to lose the funding of more than $700 million in child welfare services because time ran out. This bill (identical in both the Senate and House) is a strong reauthorization bill that has bipartisan support in the Senate and the House! It will continue funding to provide adoption support, assist children in foster care to be reunited with parents and help vulnerable families. In addition the bill will strengthen the current education access provisions for children in foster care. It will also maintain critical substance abuse treatment funds for child welfare and direct states to outline their policies for the more than 200,000 children who come into contact with child welfare each year.

There are limited federal funds to help address prevention of children going into foster care, children being adopted from foster care and support for families that can stay together. These two programs provide some of that important help to your state’s child welfare system and budget. Congress is running out of legislative calendar days to bring the reauthorization of these two programs to the floor and complete the reauthorization before it expires Sept. 30.
